This is gonna be quick note. You see, I'm really getting to know the denizens of this little cafe (and if you've ever wondered what a 'denizen' was, well, we got 'em here.) Sure, I know some of the clientele by name, but half the fun in a place like this is assigning nicknames to the regulars I've not met yet.
Today, Larry The Subvocalizer is in here, and I must say, he makes it a bit difficult to concentrate. He's always got a copy of The New York Times with him (gotta find out where he gets that around here) and not only does he sort of softly hum every third or fifth word as it goes by, he occasionally comments somewhat more loudly in charmingly archaic terms ... "Bosh!" he'll blurt, or "You eejits!" (I suspect he's a Democrat.) It's a show unto itself, and on any other day, I'd savor the opportunity, but tomorrow's departure day and I need to shop for some show shirts that haven't been seen and photographed dozens of times at festivals and venues all over the country for the past 8 years. As you can see, it's a big day.
Howdy, Compadres -
Here in Marin County a hint of summer is in the air. It's almost the time of year to savor the taste and feel of mixing Fizzies and warm hose-water right in your mouth. Pretty soon runaway kites will go sailing over the back yard. And speaking for myself, I've already made a few exes through mosquito bites with my thumbnail and pretended that that actually stopped the itching. Yes, summer is almost here.
And for yours truly, this summer will mean stalking the wily shekel not only all over this country, but in Europe as well, where the American dollar is now apparently a mere wispy shadow of its former self. But even here at home money doesn't look like money, methinks. Quarters, of course, have looked like Milton & Bradley game tokens for years, but good heavens, have you seen what can only be described as The Lavender Five? I don't claim to have a great eye for design, but sure as shootin' I can spot bad design when I see it, and this new five-dollar bill really brings out my inner Martha Stewart. Now, I had thought it was pretty bad when Ben Franklin got the full, Oprah-style makeover a number of years back and ended up looking like Jack Benny. But poor Abe Lincoln looks as if some tipsy barfly spilled cheap wine all over the front of him, and in back, it looks like he's got a big wooden nickel stuck to his shoe. In a Helvetica font, no less. The geniuses inside The Beltway have apparently decided that the best way to fight money laundering is to pre-launder the money ... with purple socks in the same load. Augh. I wish I had time for a proper rant on this topic, but time is short and Larry The Subvocalizer is really on a roll, so I'll press on.
Much of the first half of May I'll be in The Great Southeast. Then it's back home for some local shows and a reunion of 20 years-worth of alumni of my artistic alma mater The Royal Lichtenstein Circus, and then 10 days in Greece at the end of June with an ad hoc acoustic trio called The Sirens Of San Francisco. We'll be playing a benefit for the Arete Fund and then doing some house concerts and club dates. If any other readers would like me to come play for extended periods in Mediterranean settings, please do let me know ASAP.
